Many 19th Century composers turned to their country’s folk song and dance traditions
for inspiration in their art music. Certainly Dvorák did so in his 6th Symphony,
and there is very obviously Norwegian folk-dance influence in Grieg’s Piano Concerto.
Khachaturian, in the 20th Century, ‘encouraged’ to write music that would be widely
popular, tailored his style to be particularly Russian. Our soloist tonight is the
gifted pianist, Robert Thompson.
